On Location

When painting on location my interest is in conveying a sense of identity and place. Most of my recent work is about coastal Maine where I live and Umbria, Italy.

Although I paint in gouache my approach is similar to traditional oil painting. I work dark to light using a Burnt Sienna underpainting to establish the structure of the composition.
